I love to keep a file of images when I’m writing a story. I will just cut and paste into a document, or a simple image programme on the computer, or make a slideshow of images that inspire me.
An example that I loved is from when I was writing a story about an autistic teen. I had read all about Daniel Tammet, and watched some documentaries on people like Temple Grandin, and was fascinated. I found a picture of a robot which to me embodied my main character’s feelings. In the picture, the robot was talking with a bird using musical notes instead of words, in an apparent inability to connect with humans. I don't know if that is how autistic people feel, but it gave me a strong sense of the character's feelings towards himself: misunderstood, and desperate to communicate. I would look at that picture when I needed a little inspiration in regards to how my character might think, feel or act.
